synopsis

Inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece, Barry Lyndon, INTEMPERANCE skims the controversial persona of Canada’s first literary celebrity to the United States, George Copway that includes a vexed re-enacment from his 1850 best-selling book, The Traditional History of the Ojibway Nation.

In 1850, George Copway was Canada's first literary celebrity in the United States and the first Indian to publish a history of his nation, the Ojibway. INTEMPERANCE is a satire that brings to life a morally complex story of his people living in changing times.

Commissioned as part of the imagineNATIVE Film Festival's Embargo Collective II, this film is also part of the omnibus feature film THE EMBARGO PROJECT, consisting of all five Embargo short films. INTEMPERANCE was funded by Telefilm, BravoFACT, APTN, the BC Arts Council, and imagineNATIVE.
